Current Planners/Workers: Jennifer Woodward, Drew Johnson (<-- make these links to their resumé summaries on cagreens.org)

Since the March 2011 GA Meeting in Berkeley there has been a small interest group which is exploring the use of the web software system, CiviCRM. Added to a web site (Joomla!, Drupal 6 or 7, Wordpress 3), CiviCRM may be a very powerful way to provide the GPCA -- and county parties, local and state-wide campaigns -- with semi-automated fund raising services and with volunteer registration, tasks registration (for GPCA and/or for individual campaigns in CA), and a semi-automated way to assign volunteers to tasks that need to be done. However since Fall 2011 the official rented NationBuilder site (cagreens.nationbuilder.com) has been the superior way to all the above to provide volunteer, donor, registered voter information, likely voter assessment, precinct walk lists, etc. The technical question remains: which of these different types of sites have sufficiently "special" features and services, and low cost of ownership, such that 2+ different types of sites working together in ways to be determined would provide "better" user and party services than would either one type alone and "built-out" to enable more of it's special services?

'''Advantages of Having A CiviCRM Master Site and Database:''' of GPCA Members, Activists, Supports and Likely Voters
* NationBuilder site data can be exported to CSV or CiviCRM-formatted files.
* CiviCRM site(s) can import either CSV or CiviCRM-formated data from files saved in those respective file formats.
* NationBuider site(s) can import either CSV or CiviCRM-formated data from files saved in those respective file formats.

'''Disadvantages of Planning and Maintaining a CiviCRM Master Site and Database(s):'''
* CiviCRM is a unique, idiomatic CRM web application language and thus hard to learn for both lay people end-users, organization stakeholders, and technically "wise" CiviCRM site and/or DB and services developers not yet well trained in these obscure idioms.
* This is why the CiviCRM core and extension developers and trainers hold expensive classes for their corporate users world-wide and make a big living giving these classes.

'''History''': For undocumented reasons, the assumption in early 2011 was that CiviCRM services would be "integrated" with a new Drupal 7 web site for the GPCA; as this was a configuration touted by both the official Drupal and CiviCRM core developers at the time. GPCA members who were principals in the exploration and preparation of a CiviCRM-based site in early 2011 were: Marnie Glickman, Marin, and Masada Disenhouse, Ventura. GPCA "old ITWG" person, Bert Huer, SF, may (or was to) be the Project Manager. He resigned from the ITWG in Fall 2011; the remaining "old ITWG" members resigned in Feb. 2012. Informal IT person since 2010, Jennifer Woodward, SF, may become the defacto project managing "secretary" until someone better comes along. JGW 11.09.15 Since the May, 2012 GA meeting in San Francisco, Tim Laidman is the new (and thus far only) co-coordinator for the "new ITWG." Mike Feinstein of Santa Monica remains the "supervising" state party coordinator of the ITWG.

Marnie Glickman decided either later in Sept. 2011 or in October 2011 to give up on the CiviCRM development activities and committed the GPCA to rent the "superior" already-working voter, donor, voter and campaign management web application services provided by NationBuilder.com. Those minimal start-up-site services were initially very inexpensive, $19/mo., to rent. The NB services remained very cheap (low monthly rent) until the number of NB users exceed 500. Without further investigation and documentation, those services were probably "adequate" for the GPCA going into the Nov. 2012 election. However the effectiveness of the NB services actually provided for either the June Primary or the Nov. 6 General Election in 2012 remains to be reported in any detail. For the record: The minimum $19/mo. rental fee is a suitable low amount to pay for having a test NB site available. I (JGW) have setup a test NB site and I pay that amount. If/when the "new ITWG" of 2013 decides that my or some other test NB site should be "built-up" for testing purposes prior to similar services being enabled on the "live" NB site, obviously the costs to maintain the test NB site will increase. Some I think not well planned-for or managed escalation in fees paid to NB have already occurred. As of early 2013, the monthly charges due NationBuilder are above $200/month, or potentially over $2400/year for 2013. JGW 11.12.31 and 13.02.20

In my (JGW's) opinion, an opinion likely endorsed by many experienced IT people, the Nation Builder (NB) services ought to be "reverse engineered" as soon as possible. Since late Feb. 2013, I have performed some of that "reverse engineering" with respect to documenting the "user fields" and field data-types which the official GPCA NB site provides us, the GPCA. Those results are now (or will be soon) available on this wiki site and on my (JGW's) CAGreenIDEAS.org site. JGW 13.02.20

The NB services, which are evolving slowly for the GPCA, have been since the CAGreens.nationbuilder.com site inception in late 2011 "the gold standard" with which any other CMS site development services for the GPCA should be compared. When "sufficient" NB services have been well-documented, a threshold yet to be determined, similar and improved CRM and social-networking services in other CMSes can be explored, their respective design requirements developed, and 1+ prototype "demonstration" work-alike test site(s) developed. One of the prototype NB-like site(s) I imagine should be developed, perhaps at a very low priority because of the complexity and the "new ITWG's" naivetee, would continue to use CiviCRM on either or both a Drupal test web site and/or on a Joomla! test web site. The part-time, no-deadline effort of a Joomla! + CiviCRM site or a Joomla! + Community Builder Pro site would "protect" or be available as a potential backup to GPCA NB-based automated political efforts in 2013 or 2014 in case the NB services somehow prove to be "in-adequate" to our needs. JGW 11.12.31 and 13.02.20
Jenniwoohttp://wiki.cagreens.org/index.php?title=IT/D%26D/CiviCRM_Site_Development&diff=3448IT/D&D/CiviCRM Site Development2013-12-02T10:43:38Z
Jenniwoo: minor edits, jgw131202: 0243

The NB services, which are evolving, are currently "the gold standard" with which any other CMS site development services for the GPCA should be compared.

The NB services, which are evolving, are currently "the gold standard" with which any other CMS site development services for the GPCA should be compared.

* [[How the CAGreens.NationBuilder.com site does it's work for the GPCA]] CAGreens.nationbuilder.com is the official NB site. Since inception in Fall 2011, it is "poorly" but otherwise transparently "integrated" with the official Drupal 7 CAGreens.org web site. The home NB site, nationbuilder.com, has short video tutorials of what an NB site can do for clients who rent their own NB site. However, we the "new ITWG" and interested-and-able GPCA stakeholders need to develop and make available online for reference GPCA-specific goals, objectives, as well as more detailed requirements and specifications for our GPCA NB main site as-it-is, as-it-might-be-soon and as any NB "sub-sites" might exist, such as a sub-site for each county party, a sub-site for short-lived campaigns in a given 6-9 month election cycle, etc. '''CAUTION''': NB-site + Drupal-site integration (or NB-site + Joomla! site integration) is a subject not yet discussed let alone documented. But the pairing may be more beneficial to the GPCA than doing what NB wants: put all "our GPCA data marbles" on an NB site (and sub-sites) which we rent from NB. JGW 13.02.20
* [[Design Requirements for our Drupal 7 site with Organic Groups]] Organic Groups (OG) is a suite of Drupal modules which enable the definition of, data input to, searching and reporting of user-groups and members of groups and work done or to be done by group members. Setting up OG to do these things is more complex than setting up similar service using, say, a Joomla! site and the inexpensive Community Builder Pro set of extensions to Joomla! The later may serve as the "mock-up" site for better services to be developed and deployed on a future "live" Drupal 7 + OG web site, which CAGreens.org could become.
Setting this up would be "a lot of technical work." But once setup, the costs and benefits of maintaining this configuration of sites and database might well be cheaper than using a NationBuilder site to provide the same plus "political information" services.

The development of a prototype Drupal version 7 web site for the GPCA was approved at the March 2011 GA meeting in Berkeley. Marnie Glickman, Marin County, was the "lead" person who interfaced with the site developers, [http://www.radicaldesigns.org Radical Designs], San Francisco. Radical Designs received a contract, for work done roughly from April-September, 2011, to design the look, navigational feel, and probably the initial configuration of the proposed new GPCA web site to be implemented with the Drupal version 7 content management system (CMS). Some, if not all, of the 113,000 existing GPCA members' names and email addresses were added to the site. A GPCA Donors and/or Volunteers sign-up and relationship management system as well as a few other services were instantiated (setup in a simple way) on the new site using the free, complex and powerful "enterprise class" Drupal add-on module called "CiviCRM." The services provided by CiviCRM need to be "matured" and well-tested. jgw111019

This section of "IT/" exists to let Marnie and other D7 web site project participants post any news she or they want to make public about the project work as it continues post contract-work completion.

This section of the GPofCalWiki site might also capture non-technical GPCA members' ideas about what they want to see and do on a new GPCA Drupal 7 web site. Perhaps they can simply "type in their ideas" on an existing or new "ideas" web page put in this section. The "ideas submission" process on this site, however it may develop, would function like an on-going informal focus group of and for the benefit of the eventual GPCA end-users of the mature D7 web site. If necessary (and on request), I (jgw) can create a survey for GPCA members and current GPCA D7 project participants to "take" on [http://www.CAGreenIDEAS.org CAGreenIDEAS]. Their members in a more controlled "survey setting" can submit what additional or changed content and features they want to see on the GPCA Drupal 7 web site. And they can add comments about what features and content are not in that survey which ought to be listed and rated in a revised survey by "the membership." In addition, if non-technical GPCA members demand it, I can create a discussion blog on CAGreenIDEAS as well.

In these ways over whatever time period GPCA people choose to take (1) the "ideas for improvements" document converges on a consensus for "the most wanted" features and services, and (2) the GPCA D7 site developers can implement those services deemed by that document and by any other new "requirements" documentation that emerges all of which articulates which are the highest priority features and services to be added to the D7 site a.s.a.p. This section might also capture non-technical GPCA members' ideas about what they want to see and do on a new GPCA Drupal web site, in a simple "type in your ideas" on an existing "ideas" web page process that would function like an on-going focus group of and for the ultimate GPCA end-users. If necessary, I can create a survey for GPCA members to "take" on [http://www.CAGreenIDEAS.org CAGreenIDEAS] where members in a more controlled "survey setting" submit what content and features they want to see on a GPCA Drupal web site. And they can add comments about what features and content are not in that survey which ought to be listed and rated by "the membership." In addition, if non-technical GPCA members demand it, I can create a discussion blog on CAGreenIDEAS as well. JG Woodward 11.09.15

The Master List of CiviCRM Input Data Fields is to be a list of the names and data-types of donor information which CiviCRM will capture from a one-time or repeat donor to the GPCA. Project participants who have a new field name to add to the list below please create a new row in the wiki table below. The new row should have the field name in the first column and the field data-type in the second column. Some of us IT people can correct spelling and rearrange the order of the field names in the table in ways that will be easier and "more logical" for donors to fill in when they register as a donor on a future GPCA web site that uses CiviCRM.

Data-type names include: alpha-numeric (AN), integer (Int), phone-number (PN), decimal number (DN), and money-value (MV). It may help to first setup this list in a two column spread-sheet, then login to the wiki and add the new/revised field names to this table.

Later in the CiviCRM design process, the data field names in the master list may be cloned (copied) into separate named mockup pages of a web form. Later still a CiviCRM form may be created according to the corresponding wiki list of data field names. JGW 11.09.15
