By agreeing on a set of goals, we give the party definition and purpose. From those goals we develop strategies for their implementation.\n
The state party wants to hear what Locals think our long-term goals should be. This requires some degree of open discussion, but the exercise must remain moderated by the theme of realistic goals. For every suggested goal, the presenter should have some idea of a strategy to implement that goal.\nBasically, the question to answer is, \"What should the GPCA accomplish in five years and in ten years?\"\n
\n\n\n
Discussion Notes
\nFirst, goals were listed and benefits of those goals were added. Then, the goals were reviewed and annotated with \"needs\" required to implement them. These \"needs\" are the basic elements of implementation strategies. Finally, the \"needs\" were analyzed for common threads across the goals. This defines core resources and tasks needed to affect the over-all goals and strategies.\n \n
Goals and Needs
\nIn discussing the benefits of each goal, common themes emerged: party growth, visibility (e.g. name recognition; publicity; reputation), promoting Green values / making political statement, and recruiting and supporting candidates.\n\nGoals:\n
Legislation - propose, write, and support
\nNeeds:\n
People and computers for tracking\n
Qualified legislative authors\n
Lobbyists and communications\n
\n\n\n
Public Concerns - issues that are of the highest concern to the public at-large; responses to current events
\nNeeds:\n
Surveys, petitions, and public discourse to identify concerns; parse for viable, not contrived, concerns\n
Relate to candidates' campaigns\n
\n\n\n
Visibility / Recognition - public figures to promote the party; create/participate in significant political actions, generating publicity; wider use of Internet for broader reach
\nNeeds:\n
People and materials for tabling\n
Use of Internet\n
Activities/action that get attention\n
Outreach to other organizations\n
Impressive candidates\n
Money for promotional tasks\n
Identify key issues and articulate Green positions
\n
\n\n\n
Recruit Candidates
\nNeeds:\n
Find viable prospects; use personal and organizational contacts; name recognition desirable\n
Better support from party\n
\n\n\n
Increase Registration
\nNeeds:\n
People and training for voter registration\n
Determine reasons people want to be Green; reasons why people reluctant to change registration\n
Use of Internet\n
Visibility and recognition\n
\n\n \n
Electoral Reforms - finances, voting systems, ballot access
\nNeeds:\n
Identify specific reforms; overturn \"Citizens United\" lawsuit; repeal or reform Top-Two primaries (Prop 14); reinstate Fairness Doctrine; initiate public financing\n
Create or support effective legislation \n
Visibility and outreach\n
\n\n\n
Build and Strengthen Locals
\nNeeds:\n
Contact all registered Greens; technology for outreach; regional events\n
Articles in Green Focus on party building\n
Understand reasons to join and stay active in the party\n
Support from state party\n
Local press coverage (letters to editor, actions and events); leverage off other organizations and schools\n
\n\n\n
Common Themes
\nThe following resource \"needs\" were found to be common to most goals:\n

\n
\n
Fund raising\n
Staffing - volunteers and paid staff\n
Visibility and recognition\n
Use of Internet\n
Viable Locals and resources from state party
\n
\n
"

They give us more media coverage... including of [our] \"protests\" when we are not \"allowed\" into debates. I consider Executive Office (Governor, etc) campaigns as important as local seats. We simply need to be more strategic on how to support and organize both. Fund raise first quarter 2011 [jw: or Q1 2012?], and we're on our way!\n\nJenni Woodward (SF): No. But I think we need an online registry of GPCA people, their education and talents (perhaps including resum\u00e9s and qualifications for various offices as well?). We also could benefit greatly if we had an online candidates training program for various offices, state and local, as well as for some congressional districts and national agency appointments. Some of us might try to get someone appointed to an office c/o the Democrats who hold higher management positions in that office. It's not us vs. them anymore and it's not enough to just be opinionated (and right)."
